GCCEC tracks ahead on key sustainability initiatives

The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) is tracking ahead of key targets in its five-year sustainability plan, delivering strong waste diversion results at the close of year two.

A structured waste management plan is now embedded across all areas of the venue, driving a consistent approach to how waste is managed, separated and processed.

Over two years, these initiatives have delivered measurable outcomes, including:

  • Awarded EarthCheck Regional Leader status for waste recycling
  • Diverted 92.91 tonnes of food organics away from landfill and to commercial composting
  • Removed 195.1 tonnes equivalent of Co2 emissions from the atmosphere by diverting our food organics waste to commercial food composting

The results support several key objective areas in GCCEC’s 2024 to 2028 Sustainability Strategy, including landfill diversion, carbon reduction, auditing and data tracking, certification and community benefit.

The plan is supported by clear business procedures, regular auditing and ongoing refinement, ensuring a consistent approach to waste management across the venue.

Alongside EarthCheck Master recertification, marking more than seventeen years of continuous benchmarking, GCCEC has adopted an environment, health and safety platform into daily operations. The platform gives real-time visibility across waste streams and sustainability metrics, strengthening reporting and supporting evidence-based decision making.

These systems have increased the Centre’s capacity to expand initiatives such as its 10c container program, with more than 150,000 bottles collected and recycled in year two. Contributing to its charitable donations, it stands as one of the Centre’s proudest examples of team and community engagement in action.

Nick Jeffrey, General Manager of Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, said the impact from its five-year plan reflects strong progress against long term targets.

“GCCEC is tracking ahead of its sustainability targets, and that reflects the systems we have in place and the consistency and dedication of how they are applied across the business,” he said.

“When waste is managed well at an operational level, it creates flow on benefits, from reducing landfill to improving reporting and supporting initiatives like our container recycling program. The results are underpinned by ours Facilities, Operational and Sustainability teams, whose day-to-day practices are central to delivering these outcomes.”

The Centre will continue to build on its five-year sustainability strategy through a focus on operational improvement, resource efficiency, team engagement and responsible event delivery.
