Sustainability Leadership at GCCEC
Championing Environmental Innovation
The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) leads the way in environmental innovation, embodying sustainable development’s core principles: stewardship, inclusivity, integrity and transparency. Achieving ‘EarthCheck Master’ certification in 2023, GCCEC showcases its unwavering and ongoing commitment to the highest environmental standards in the industry.
A Foundation of Sustainability
Since its opening in 2004, GCCEC has consistently integrated environmental and social sustainability into its operations, strategy and planning. A robust Sustainability Policy and Environmental Management Plan ensure that sustainability is a cornerstone of the Centre’s business practices, fostering partnerships that promote environmentally conscious initiatives.
Our Sustainability Policy and Initiatives
GCCEC is renowned for setting the benchmark in sustainable meeting and event management. Our commitment extends to environmentally conscious practices across operations and design, including waste minimisation, energy and water management, and procurement of sustainable products and packaging, positioning us as a global leader in environmental stewardship.
Sustainable Event Checklist
GCCEC is committed to leading the industry towards a more environmentally conscious and sustainable future for conferencing and events. We work hard to limit our impact on the environment and have created this guide to help event planners create more environmentally conscious events.
EarthCheck Certification: Setting the Standard
EarthCheck, the world’s pre-eminent environmental management program for the travel and tourism sectors, plays a pivotal role in GCCEC’s sustainability journey. As the first convention centre to attain EarthCheck Gold certification in 2015 and subsequently achieve EarthCheck Platinum certification in 2018 and EarthCheck Master certification in 2023, GCCEC sets the benchmark for environmental performance in the events industry.
These certifications, part of EarthCheck’s comprehensive environmental management program, highlight GCCEC’s dedication to sustainable tourism and event management. Our continuous participation in EarthCheck’s pilot program for convention centres underscores our commitment to ongoing environmentally conscious practices and leadership for best practices in our sector.
Event Emissions Calculator
GCCEC is dedicated to minimising the environmental impact of events and to being a responsible industry leader in environmental innovation through providing tools and education to key stakeholders. The Centre has developed a proprietary event emissions calculator that provides insights and actionable data to the venue and its clients.
The calculation tool provides an emissions estimate based on GCCEC-specific space and energy usage. The methodology used is only applicable to Australian-based events and the calculation aligns with Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
